He’s not running this time…

Kade thought nothing could be worse than when his wife died in a car accident—especially because he’d been behind the wheel. To forget the pain, he moved on. Maybe too quickly. Now he’s the prime suspect in the death of his second wife. But they have nothing on him because he didn’t kill her.

Buying a house that needs more repairs than it’s worth seems like a good escape. When he meets Bailey, despite everything telling him to look away, guard his heart, he can’t help but fall under her charm. There’s just one problem. She’s a ghost. There can’t be any harm in loving a ghost, right? Nothing can hurt her, not even him. Except there’s another presence in the house. One that terrifies her.

Between contending with a pesky detective determined to peg him for murder, a ghost he’s falling in love with, and the mysterious accidents that keep happening to him at work, Kade fears he might be joining Bailey on the other side sooner rather than later.

Excerpt

He whipped open the door, then regretted it when a sharp pain hit his chest. So maybe he wasn’t a hundred percent better yet. He forced himself not to put a hand to his chest as if that would stop the pain, but he couldn’t hide the wince.

“You should go to the hospital,” Bailey said, standing close to him.

“I’m not going to the hospital.”

Detective Holstrom frowned. “I never said anything about the hospital.”

Right. Shit.

He could see a ghost now. Nobody else could. He’d have to watch how he spoke around her.

“What can I do for you, detective?”

“You do look a little pale.” Holstrom’s frown increased in strength. Even a bit of worry touched his eyes. Such an odd look for the man.

“I electrocuted myself. I’m fine. You can’t get rid of me that easily.”

“Seriously, Kade, that’s not funny,” Bailey huffed, crossing her arms.

It took every ounce of self-control not to reassure her he was truly fine.

“Then you should go to the hospital. I’ll drive you myself.”

Kade’s eyes darted to the vehicle in the driveway that didn’t belong to him. No doubt the irritating man would make him sit in the back like a suspect.

“That’s not happening. It was a little shock. Nothing more. Again, what can I help you with?”

Detective Holstrom removed his notepad from the inside pocket of his jacket. “So you said you arrived home at six o’clock that night. Multiple witnesses said you left at four thirty from the job site. It doesn’t take an hour and a half to get home. Tell me again why the time gap.”

Kade wanted to strangle this man. He always asked the same questions. Kade always gave the same answers. It was an annoying dance they dueled together all the time. He knew Holstrom was looking for him to slip up somewhere. Catch him in a lie. He never would.

“I went to the office. I had to grab some paperwork. Nobody was there when I arrived and when I left. We’ve been over this multiple times.”

“So piss off, asshole.”

Kade snorted and pressed his lips together to keep more laughter from escaping. He’d forgotten Bailey was standing next to him. He wished he could say what Bailey had.

“Your wife’s death isn’t funny. I will put the pieces together soon.”

“This is one puzzle you won’t solve. At least not with me as the last piece. Because I didn’t kill her.”

Kade shut the door in his face, done with the interrogation that Holstrom had no right to do. Again.

“Seriously, I’ll go try and push him or something. Trip him. Make him fall flat on his face.”

“We have to work on you not speaking when someone else is around.” Kade tried to sound stern, but he knew she could see the grin he couldn’t hide.

He needed a strong drink. He turned toward the kitchen, his laughter filling the empty house as Bailey continued to rant about the ways she’d hurt the detective for him.

Maybe having a ghost around wouldn’t be such a bad thing. She made his life not as dull and boring.
