âWyatt & Briella bring us down dark & despair which was heartbreaking. The stubbornness of Wyatt & his love most definitely was a hard push needed. You enjoy the banter that the men have developed & love that their ladies have a bond. Dark & enjoyable for sure.âÂ

Excerpt
But if one read between the lines, he was stalling. He was scared of one tiny woman who could send his heart into a crazy erratic mess with one glance his way.
They didnât make it back to the precinct until six oâclock.
He breathed a sigh of relief when he didnât see Briella sitting on the steps to the front door of the precinct. It wouldnât be the first time heâd caught her there.
Tate didnât say anything other than chuckle low under his breath.
He let out another sigh of relief when he didnât notice her sitting in the lobby waiting for him to arrive. When it was cold out, she sat in there sometimes as well.
When they walked into the large room where most of their desks were set up, he almost released his third sigh of relief. Until the chair in front of his desk swiveled around and the one woman who haunted his nightly dreams pinned him with a desolate stare.
All the air rushed out of his lungs.
Wow.
He was an asshole. No doubt about it. Heâd been cruel staying away from the precinct all day knowing sheâd show up. Instead of getting this inevitable meeting out of the way, he tried his hardest to avoid her.
The sad, melancholy expression in her amber-colored eyes had him feeling like the lowest cad on earth.
Tate wasnât one to mind his own business, so he did what he always did when they returned. He sat down at his desk. But he had the decency to not make eye contact with her and started to input their latest interviews into the computer.
âWhereâve you been?â Briella moved the chair back and forth as if she were getting ready to do a full three-hundred-sixty-degree twirl.
His brows puckered low as he processed how to respond. His typical response would be to throw back a condescending retort. Because thatâs what they did. They fought like two lions trying to mark the territory as theirs. Even when he didnât want to act that way with her. She brought it out of him so easily. He also sensed she didnât want to be coddled by anyone, least of all him. So he dished it right back.
âHonestly, avoiding you.â Then he averted his gaze to the floor, shocked he even uttered that. He shouldâve gone with his typical arrogant response instead.
His chair made the short squeaky sound it always made when he stood up.
He never considered himself a coward, and he wouldnât start now. He met her gaze when she invaded his personal space, getting so close, he was tempted to close the distance and kiss her. Wipe away her painful memories and fill her day with something other than death and despair. But that would put him in the disrespectful and disgusting category. He wasnât that much of an asshole. Only a semi-one.
âIâm hard on you, I know.â She nodded as if she needed to agree with herself. Water gathered in her eyes. âI know youâve been doing your best. I want answers.â
God, he ached for those same answers. He wanted to give her the peace she so desperately prayed for.
âOne of these days, I will give you those answers. I promise.â
Her gorgeous amber eyes bore into his as if she could see to his very soul. âAre you supposed to make such promises? Youâve never done that before.â
His hand ached to reach up and brush her black hair behind her ear, then make a quick sweep across her lips with a tender kiss.
Shake it loose. You canât cross the line, no matter how much you want to.
Even the three little words he said all the time to Tate simply to annoy him didnât stop the impulse. His hand lifted and caressed her cheek before drifting back down by his side. Her eyes widened at the contact. Yeah, he didnât know why he did it either. Shocked the hell out of him too.
He leaned closer so no one elseânot even Tateâcould hear him.
âFor you, Briella, I would do anything to see you smile, to take the pain away, to erase the torment in your beautiful eyes. I shouldnât promise anything. But you have my word, I will solve your sisterâs case.â
